During the expansion of the underground line U2 in Vienna there appeared the area in the plan of the city located between the Prater and The Ernst Happel Stadium. A characteristic feature of this area is the large number of pedestrian connections: from west to east – from Praterstern underground station to the river port; from north to south – from the ferry station Dusika-Starion to channel Donau Kanal.

As a result of this development near existing racetrack housing and office area Viertel Zwei arose. It had such a success that by the second stage it was decided to include the rest of the land around the racetrack and two of the three spectator platforms which were abandoned for over 20 years.
The actual task of open international architectural competition is the revitalization of the stands with changing functions, but to preserve the structure. Completed in 1910, the stands have unique design of reinforced concrete, which have to be saved. In addition, the structure of buildings and their specific design have to remain visible, and the new filling facilities must provide residential, office and public spaces.

In this case, the most appropriate solution is to design the loft apartments, which along with the traditional functional areas of a bedroom, living room, kitchen, dining room, can create space for office work at home. Apartments are located in such way that all levels of existing platforms and ladders are preserved.  Such decisions will ultimately possible to obtain 23 apartments, the average area of 150 square meters, with a total requirement of at least 3,000 square meters.
It was decided to give the ground floor for social purposes due to the needs of the residents. In his spare time one can use the hall for yoga, rooms for rock climbing, music room, art studio and library.

During the decision of platforms’ facades, an attempt was made to modernize their look while maintaining the spirit of historic architecture. Due to combination of the existing facade planes and the glass, the lightness of composition is received and existing structures become visible. Renewed stands will harmonically fit in the environment.
